Finding Calm in Shifting Times

As summer winds down, and the pace picks up, the shift into fall often means moving from slower, unscheduled days into packed calendars and renewed demands. For some, this transition can feel like whiplash… suddenly it’s back-to-back meetings, deadlines, and little time to breathe.

This is exactly when self-care matters most. Not the grand, time-consuming kind, but simple, repeatable routines that keep you grounded.

Here are a few ways to steady yourself when life shifts:

  • Start with Stillness: Begin your day with 3 deep breaths, before reaching for your phone or opening your inbox.
  • Take Micro Pauses: Between tasks, stand, stretch, or sip water. Just two minutes signals your body that it’s safe to slow down.
  • Reframe the Inner Critic: Swap “I’ll never catch up” for “I’m moving through this, one breath at a time.”
  • Evening Review: As you unwind, take a moment to remind yourself of one good thing that happened to you during the day, what brought you joy, or made you smile.

Whenever I need a quick reset, I close my eyes, take a few deep breaths, and take my mind to peaceful place in nature, like this beach in Chatham, Cape Cod.

Transitions, although they bring change, don’t have to throw you off balance. With small routines that help you anchor yourself in the present moment —and the support of Reiki, if it calls you—you can move through any shift with steadiness, clarity, and calm.
