A Better Way to Live

Do you check the weather every morning? Possibly the night before? Watch the news daily? Listen to energy forecasts even?

It’s only natural to want to be prepared, for both the good and the bad. But what if you could train your mind to stay in the now? Trust your inner resources instead of just tuning into external sources? To stop spinning through worry and “what-if’s,” and instead settle into the present moment with calm and clarity?

That’s something my client Anthony and I explored in an in-depth conversation a few years ago. He reflected on how easy it is to anticipate the worst and quietly hope things won’t fall apart. And then he said something that I will not forget:

“If I can do that with a negative thought, I can do the same with a positive one.”

He’s right. Where your thoughts go, your energy flows. Dr. James Doty even explains the neuroscience of this process beautifully in his book, Mind Magic.

To me, that lesson is also at the heart of Reiki and mindfulness, and something that has changed my life. When I was interviewed for a recent The Rye Record article, I shared my story on how I became a Reiki practitioner and found a better way to live. It didn’t happen overnight, but once I started to Reiki self-care daily, my body learned how to relax, and my mind became calmer. I began to make different decisions. Today, when life and sh*t happen, it’s easier to bounce back, because I learned to regulate my nervous system and build resilience.
