Are You Making Self-Care a Priority This Year?

By Andrea Kartika Deierlein

January 23, 2019

Several years ago, I decided to kiss new year’s resolutions goodbye and commit to practice self-care on a daily basis. Thanks to Reiki, I have learned that self-care is a way to show myself self-compassion.

We can’t pour from an empty cup. Yet so many people are not aware that self-care isn’t just physical. Self-care requires an integrated approach that nourishes and replenishes the body, mind, and spirit. Tune in and listen to your body and mind. But to listen also requires to be silent. Even if it is only for five minutes a day, I invite you to be still and just breathe. If you need to give your mind something to do, repeat “I am breathing in” and “I am breathing out” with every inhale and exhale. This will help you focus and be present.

If you want to explore more mindfulness this year, I will continue to facilitate the Mindful Monday at the Crestwood Library two times a month. The next scheduled dates are January 28, February 11 & 25, and March 4 & 18. For more information, visit the Events section on my website. On February 6, you can also join me for a lunchtime meditation at the White Plains Library.

Self-care is also one of the foundations of Reiki practice. With Reiki you can literally take your well-being into your own hands. Barbara, who took Reiki 1 with me in November, sums it up very nicely: “Reiki requires no lifestyle change, but it will definitely change your life for the better.” If you are interested in learning Reiki, the next Reiki 1 training is on March 3 & 10. Upon request, I also teach Reiki one-on-one, for people who only want to practice Reiki for their own self-care.

My best wishes for a healthy and wellthy 2019, full of self-care!
