How Do You Define Healing?

By Andrea Kartika Deierlein

According to Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., “Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.”

I love this quote. The more I practice and immerse myself in the system of Reiki, the better equipped I feel to deal with life’s challenges. It fills me with gratitude and joy when I get to witness this process with my clients and students. Since Thrive Reiki opened its door in February 2016, people from all ages and walks of life have experienced how Reiki can stimulate their own innate healing abilities. Sometimes, one session is enough to delve into much needed relaxation. Sometimes, acute or chronic physical or emotional issues require a little bit more or regular support. Last week, I had the opportunity to help “prepare” a dog and her owner for surgery. We sat in meditation together and created a calm and peaceful healing space right where we were.

When I first learned Reiki, I thought that I was given magical hands to heal the world. But the more I practice Reiki and delve deeper into its Japanese roots, I come to realize that Reiki is so much more than just hands-on healing. It’s a system of natural healing – and a mindfulness practice that can evolve into a person's spiritual practice.
